Polycarbonate

Pros:

  • Polycarbonate is much more impact‑resistant than glass. It handles hail, debris, storms better. With UV protective coatings, it resists yellowing, becomes brittle less quickly.

  • It’s lighter so less structural load, easier installation.

Cons:

  • Over time polycarbonate can degrade: scratches, surface wear, UV damage (if not well protected) lead to loss of clarity, more opacity, potential embrittlement. 

  • Thermal expansion is an issue — it moves more with temperature changes, which means installation quality is very important. Improper sealing or excessive constraints can cause warping, leaks.

  • Typically shorter warranty / service life compared to high quality glass. 

  • Expected lifespan, for good, UV‑protected polycarbonate in many climates, is often around 10‑20 years, depending on quality, exposure, maintenance. 

Toughened Glass 

Jawan Farms preferred.

Pros:

  • Very durable in terms of resisting scratches and maintaining clarity over long time. It does not yellow. 

  • Longer life if nothing physically damages it — can last 20‑50+ years, even decades longer, especially if high quality glass and well maintained. 

  • Stronger than regular glass, safer in breakage (shatters into small granules in many cases), more rigidity and less thermal movement than polycarbonate.

Cons:

  • Slightly more brittle: while toughened glass is much better than untreated glass, heavy impact (very large hail, falling limbs etc.) can still break it, but rarely!. 

  • Heavier, meaning you need stronger framing, more care in installation. 

  • Can be more expensive initially (material and installation).

  • Heat conduction tends to be worse: can transmit more radiant/infrared, worse insulation unless special glass or double glazing is used.

Comparison: Which lasts longer?

If by “better longevity” you mean which one on average will last longer under good installation and maintained in a typical environment, the edge goes to toughened glass. Glass tends to maintain its properties (clarity, strength) for many decades if not mechanically damaged. Polycarbonate will tend to degrade over time from UV, scratching etc., even if it doesn’t break.

That said, in harsh climates or places with frequent hail, big impact risk, or where structural support is minimal, polycarbonate might outperform glass in practice because glass might break while polycarbonate survives, even if the polycarbonate gradually degrades.

Considerations for your specific case

To decide what’s better for you, consider:

  1. Climate: how strong is the sun / UV, do you have hail or large debris / storms, temperature swings, etc.

  2. Desired aesthetics: clarity, views through roofing etc.

  3. Budget: upfront vs maintenance costs / replacement.

  4. Structural support: whether your frame can take the weight of glass.

  5. Maintenance willingness: cleaning, replacing damaged panes, etc.

  6. Thickness / quality: A 16 mm high‑quality polycarbonate sheet with good UV protection will perform much differently from a thin low‑grade one. Likewise, different grades of toughened glass vary.

Summary

  • Toughened glass likely has longer usable life (assuming minimal damage) and maintains clarity better over time. Lasts longer, (e.g. around 20‑50 years in many climates)

  • Polycarbonate offers higher impact resistance, lighter weight, maybe lower cost or risk of breakage, but usually requires more maintenance, and will often need replacement sooner (e.g. around 10‑20 years in many climates) assuming high quality product.
