Greenhouse Horticulture needs Bees!
The use of our indigenous social stingless bees (Tetragonula) for pollination purposes has proven successful in various Queensland crops such as macadamias, mangoes, watermelons, and lychees. These native stingless bees are particularly efficient pollinators for macadamias.
Unlike honey bees, native stingless bees tend to forage closer to their hives. This behavior offers advantages in field crops, as the native stingless bees primarily focus on working the crop flowers in proximity to their hive instead of venturing further away in search of different flower types. This behavior also makes them well-suited for pollinating greenhouse crops, as they readily adapt to the confined environment. Trials conducted at the University of Western Sydney have demonstrated their effectiveness in pollinating a variety of greenhouse crops.
Sugarbag bees produces and sells a range of stingless bee keeping products including a hive stocked with bees
In addition to their pollination services, Australia's native stingless bees produce a distinct type of tangy honey known as "sugarbag." While each hive can only yield up to one kilogram of honey per year, they are not meant to compete with the more productive honey bees (A. mellifera) in terms of general honey production. However, similar to some honey produced by honey bees, sugarbag honey has shown significant antimicrobial properties. This unique honey could be developed as a special niche product in Australia, valued for its delicious flavors and medicinal properties.
